Mosaic

Today, the World Wide Web is extremely popular across the planet. However, it wouldn't be quite as popular if it wasn't for Mosaic.

Mosaic was the web browser responsible for popularizing the World Wide Web. Its simple design made it easy to use and its availability drastically increased the awareness of the World Wide Web.

Mosaic was created by Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina, students of the NCSA (National Center for Supercomputer Applications), on January 23, 1993. It was written for X-Windows on Unix computers. The browser was offered as a free download for the general public and when Aleks Totic developed a version of Mosaic for the Macintosh, it became the first multi platform web browser.

Even though the NCSA officially January 7, 1997 discontinued Mosaic, the browser is still available for download. It has even influenced the development of several other web browsers available now.

While Mosaic is no longer in development by the NCSA, other developers have taken up furthering the development of the Mosaic browser. The VMS, for example, began development on their version of the browser in the spring of 2009.
